PV X WSL: Molly Picklum Q&A

PSA: Pura Vida is the presenting partner of the World Surf League Rising Tides program! To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with the World Surf League to bring the waves to you with our WSL Mixed Original Bracelet and the WSL Mixed Mini Braid Anklet 🌊. The upcoming WSL x Pura Vida bracelet ties back to WSL's We Are One Ocean campaign, which spotlights sustainability and ocean protection 🐬

To inspire the next generation of surfers, we had a chat with PV sponsored female surfer Molly Picklum 🤩 Born and raised in Australia, Molly started surfing at a very young age! She hopes to become one of the best surfers in the world, winning medals while earning respect and inspiring people throughout her career 🥇

Get to know Molly better here:

PV: How old are you? At what age did you start to surf?
Molly: I’m 19 years old and I started surfing at the age of 3.

PV: What made you decide to start surfing professionally?
Molly: At age 14, I was invited to a Layne Beachley surf camp at the Surfing Australia High Performance Center. After that week of surfing, I was named the rising star, chosen by Layne, and that made me start to see the career path surfing could have for me.

PV: What is your work regime?
Molly: My work regime varies a lot due to the crazy amounts of traveling, but if I’m at home, I’ll surf between 1-4 hours a day, and then go to the gym for an hour every other day. On the road, I surf and compete, and sometimes train in the gym depending on how my body is feeling.

PV: Who is your favorite sports hero?
Molly: My favorite sports hero is Ash Barty. She is obviously an amazing athlete, and the way she is so unapologetically herself is SO cool.

PV: What is your favorite food to eat the night before a big competition?
Molly: My favorite meal before a big competition wouldn’t be anything specific because I’m not a fussy eater (I just love food!), so as long as my stomach is full the night before, I’m happy and ready for the next day.

PV: What is/was your favorite place to compete?
Molly: I’d say Snapper Rocks or Pipeline. Snapper Rocks is just such a fun wave and it tends to be a crowded lineup when you’re free surfing, so to get it by yourself is incredible. The same goes for Pipeline – the crowds are so hectic, so to be out there with one other woman and have the whole lineup is truly special.

PV: What one word describes you?
Molly: One word that describes me is ALIVE!

PV: What mental tool do you use under pressure?
Molly: I use breathing or positive self-talk.

PV: What do you do to relax in your downtime?
Molly: I’ve recently started golf, so I’m enjoying that as an outlet. Other than that, I like to watch movies, listen to music, and cook.

PV: Tell us about your greatest achievement.
Molly: It’s a tough one but I’d say my second place at Snapper Rocks this year is up there. I was really proud of that result!
